Project GT of 2009

Proyecto GT which means in local slang Project Guatemala was originally created due to the high demand from local NGO’s and Non-Profits for assistance in areas related to technical assistance including but not limited to basic computer knowledge and web design.  Since then several other organisations including EntreMundos have undertaken much of this type of work. Proyecto GT is still in operation but running at a much lower capacity. The following is the post made in 2009 regarding that project.

Welcome to our blog! Here you can find up to date information about our projects and how their going. From September to December 2009 ProyectoGT will be undergoing several projects including…

  1. Ugrading the computer lab of EntreMundos,
  2. Teaching basic and advanced computer classes,
  3. Providing second hand laptops to locally run organizations,
  4. Building web pages and teaching web design to local organizations

The goal of ProyectoGT is to increase the effectiveness of local non-profits and NGO’s by improving local technical skills. Please check out the projects page to learn more about the specific projects

Ugrading the computer lab of EntreMundos

EntreMundos provides a computer lab and a location where ProyectoGT and other similar organizations can hold classes on topics ranging from basic computer introduction to advanced web design. As these computers are a little old and unable to run certain newer software including office and design programs, Proyecto GT will be performing some minor upgrades and software installations to improve the quality of the computer lab. Project completion is set for September 21st

Teaching basic and advanced computer classes

We are assisting in an intermediate class designed by EntreMundos which will be taught every Friday from 9am to 12pm. The curriculum includes basic introduction including the parts of the computer and windows operating system basics, Microsoft office 2007, email and web browsing. Although these skills may seem simple to the average North America they go a long way in Guatemala in improving the effectiveness social organizations

CMS Web Sites Program

As  Proyecto GT’s work progressed in Guatemala, staff discovered a large demand in the non-profit sector  for web sites though many did not have the funds, skills and time to maintain and manage them. This is why we have begun a project which sets up CMS (Content Management Systems) for those in need. CMS’s allow the user to edit content including text and pictures from the web page itself, similar to a blog. The CMS we set up for organizations is easy to use and has the potential to manage thousands of users, editors, clients, shopping carts, donations and much more. Giving this simple technology to people can increase their capacity and visibility to likely volunteers, partners and donors.

Providing second hand laptops to locally run organizations

Computers here are expensive and finding cheaper alternatives such as second hand computers and parts is more difficult than in  North America. For this reason we are donating second hand laptops purchased in Canada to organizations in need. The donation will be accompanied by a teacher who will give an introduction lesson on basic computer operations and an intro to microsoft office . These basic skills will increase the capacity of local organizations to better advertise, organize, communicate and administer their organizations.

The Foundation DataBase

In 2006 due to a growing demand for internet resources containing information about grants and foundations funding projects in Guatemala, Proyecto GT set up the foundation database. This resource contains information on grants and foundation for free and is in spanish. Other similar services mostly in English charge thousands of dollars for yearly subscriptions which for small organizations makes access impossible. We are currently in the process of updating the website with more resources.
